About the district

Ramat Yosef is one of the oldest and most recognizable residential neighborhoods in Bat Yam. Named after Yosef Sprinzak, the first Speaker of the Knesset. The main construction dates to the 1950s–60s: standard four- to five-story buildings without elevators, wide green courtyards, and calm, intimate street scale. Today it is an established "family" neighborhood with traditional character, synagogues, and a developed school network. The main axis of the neighborhood is Sderot Giora Yoseftal. Along it are concentrated the main social infrastructure: Bat Yam Mall shopping center, clinics, markets, and cafes. In the heart of the neighborhood is a city park with the round building of the Bat Yam Museum of Art — an architectural landmark from 1961. Proximity to the Yoseftal rapid tram station (Red Line NTA, opened in 2023) has made the neighborhood one of the most sought-after locations in the southern part of Gush Dan: 25–30 minutes to Tel Aviv's center without transfers. Today the neighborhood is undergoing targeted urban renewal programs (Tama 38 and TAML): old buildings are being reconstructed or demolished for new towers with underground parking and improved amenities. Prices in Ramat Yosef are lower than on the seaside streets of Bat Yam, but the neighborhood remains one of the most convenient for families with children thanks to its school network and transportation.

History

The neighborhood began developing in the early 1950s as part of the rapidly growing Bat Yam, which was then receiving a wave of new immigrants. It is named after Yosef Sprinzak — speaker of the first Knesset (died in 1959). Most of the existing residential buildings were constructed in the 1950s–60s in the characteristic "shikun" style of that period — standard residential concrete blocks. In 1961, the Bat Yam Museum of Art opened in the central park — a round modernist building designed by architect Yosi Glezeman. Since then, the museum has become one of the informal symbols of the neighborhood. In the 2010s, an active urban renewal program began in the neighborhood. Many old buildings fell under Tama 38 (seismic reinforcement with additional floors), and individual quarters — under TAML (pinui-binui: demolition-new construction). The opening in August 2023 of the Red Line of the Tel Aviv rapid tramway and the Yoseftal station dramatically changed the status of the neighborhood: transport connectivity with central Tel Aviv became comparable to prestigious neighborhoods like Florentin or Jaffa.

Vibe and advantages

Family-oriented, peaceful, traditional. Many retirees and long-time residents, but in recent years there has been an influx of young families and returning immigrants — thanks to the tram and relatively affordable prices. A sense of community — neighbors greet each other, synagogues are full on Saturdays, children play in the courtyards.
