About the district

A small, compact haredi (ultra-Orthodox) enclave of Bobov Hasidim within Bat Yam. A closed community centered around a large yeshiva, synagogue, Talmud-Torah, and Bat Yam's largest mikveh. The architecture is predominantly old 3-4-story houses from the 1960s–70s, without elevators or underground parking. Apartment living space is compact: 1.5–3 rooms, often with extensions (tosafot) and sukkah additions. Today the community is led by Rabbi Yaakov Yisroel Meisles, brother-in-law of the current Bobover Rebbe from Brooklyn. The worldwide center of Bobov is Borough Park, New York. The main Bobov campus in Bat Yam includes: a synagogue, Talmud-Torah, a small yeshiva and a large yeshiva in one building, as well as the city's largest mikveh.

History

The enclave was founded in 1958 by Rabbi Shlomo Halbershtam—the third Bobover Rebbe—following his first visit to Israel after the Holocaust. It was the first Bobover enclave in Israel and became a model for the expansion of the Bobover Hasidic community worldwide. Since then, the neighborhood has existed as an independent closed community with its own religious institutions, schools for boys and girls, and kosher infrastructure.
