Northern district of Bat Yam, adjacent to Jaffa. Religious-traditional in population composition. On the northwestern side, the district is bounded by Atzmaout Boulevard and Kikar HaMeginim (Defenders' Square) — the main commercial hub of the entire city and Bat Yam's "gateway" from the Tel Aviv side. Housing stock — standard Amidar "shikunim" (state housing company), built in the early 1950s: 3-4-story block houses. Part of the housing stock has already undergone Tama 38 and selective pinui-binui. Demographics: mixed Russian-speaking + North African (Moroccan, Tunisian) composition. Strong "Maghrebi" character: restaurants, markets, synagogues of traditional North African format.

History

Shikun Amidar was built in the early 1950s by the state company Amidar (established in 1949) to house new immigrants from North Africa and Europe. The company built approximately 250,000 apartments in more than 200 projects throughout Israel during its first 20 years. Bat Yam absorbed two large waves of immigrants: the 1950s (North Africa) and the 1990s (USSR). Both traces are visible in the neighborhood today. Kikar HaMeginim was built in 1953 on the site of the defensive position "Emdat a-Melech George" ("King George's Position"), which during the 1948 War of Independence protected Bat Yam from Arab forces from Jaffa. In the center of the square is a memorial to 31 defenders of Bat Yam who fell in 1948.
